About the performers

Duet partners for about a year and a half, Stella Allison and Joan Grauman hit it off the moment they met, sharing a love of the accordion and a beautiful friendship. They have performed in accordion festivals in Texas, Oregon, and Michigan, and entertain regularly in the Maryland and Virginia area.

Stella Werner Allison

Stella, who refers to herself as “just a Grandma having fun!”, was an accordion student of Sylvia Kaplowitz of Washington, DC, in the 1940s.  She performed extensively as a teenager during World War II. After graduating with a degree in music education from American University in Washington, DC, Stella took a 40-year break from the accordion to raise a family of four, and to serve in many political, community, and church organizations.  In her early 60s, Stella dusted off her old accordion, studied with Dr. Carmelo Pino, and has been a solo performer for over 10 years.  She is delighted with her duet partner, and is already planning
their next CD!

Joan Geller Grauman

Joan began studying piano at age 6, and received a degree in music education from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.  At age 23, she picked up her father’s accordion and taught herself to play. She was the accordionist for the German/Austrian dance group, GTV Immergrün (1979-1982), and the Balkan/Gypsy band, BAMCO (1983-2001).  Joan also accompanied the Klezmer clarinetist, Daniel Rozas, for several years at folk festivals, weddings, and other events.  Joan has worked as an illustrator while raising her daughter and a constant stream of various pets.  She and her husband, Dan Grauman, own SqueezinArt, a company selling
gifts for accordionists.  Joan just loves playing with “Mama Stella” and looks forward to many years of “dueting”!
